Instructional Goal:
New staff members at a collegiate newspaper will demonstrate proper interviewing procedures, recognize typical journalistic considerations and AP Style rules, and distinguish between ethical and unethical journalistic behaviors to prepare for their future writing assignments through their online introductory course at the Collegiate Times.

New collegiate newspaper staff members will:
Stating the purpose of AP style rules as well as identifying common style guidelines in practice and be able to demonstrate the proper use of certain writing considerations common for new newspaper journalists. These writing considerations include using the proper tense or voice while writing, the six different types of leads and what each should include, using quality sources, and determining article word count appropriate for different types of articles.
Subordinate Skills Analysis and Entry Behaviors:
Interested writers initiate contact with the Collegiate Times with a desire to participate as a columnist with the paper. These writers may or may not have a background in journalism, but as current students have met the university standards for enrollment (e.g. have met the basic English composition requirements, or the equivalent English as a second language testing criteria). The only required abilities for students to have to complete this lesson is for them to be able to navigate the lesson site and access required materials before coordinating their meeting with the training coordinator.
